Nintendo

When Nintendo announced plans to include online functionality with its Wii and DS, few foresaw the unconventional uses that would come about. According to Nintendo President Satoru Iwata, the company is interested in using the web to go beyond gaming.

As mentioned last week, Iwata remains focused on keeping Nintendo away from focusing on horsepower alone, “Targeting highly detailed graphics and epic stories are options, and in that situation, the gamer population doesn’t increase. The answer was creating the sensation of really playing sports on the television screen, and it’s a new type of physical interaction.”

He paints a somber image of how gaming has transformed family interaction over past generations. “There’s the 20th-century image of the family gathered in the living room before the TV. When the Famicom appeared in that image, everyone gathered around, wanting a turn on the controller. Games of that age were so fun. But somehow, the controller became complex, the father and mother backed off.”
