HP Pavilion a6130n is your new multimedia machine!

The modestly priced HP Pavilion a6130n ($750 direct) has all the oomph and features found in a high-end multimedia PC, sans discrete graphics card. This desktop PC sits between HP’s Slimline s3000 series and its high-end m8000 series in terms of both size and price point. Niceties such as 3GB of memory, digital card reader, removable hard drive, and DVD burner all contribute to making it a great birthday present for a creative child or hobbyist. It would make a good PC also for those branching out into digital media, as well as being a good home base for your camera if you’re somewhat into photography.
he system’s case fans are virtually silent, unless you have the system on top of a shelf near your head. The inside of the case is spacious, with room for an additional PCI card (two if you don’t need the installed modem), a PCIe x1 slot, and a PCIe x16 graphics card slot. There’s space for at least one more SATA or IDE hard drive, as well as another optical drive, though you may not need another internal hard drive if you use the included HP Pocket Media Drive bay. I like the Pocket Media Drives over other removable drives like the Gateway media drives because the Pocket Media drives have a standard USB “B” connector on the back. If you take the drive to another PC, you can use a standard USB cable (like the one on your printer) to connect the Pocket drive to the PC. Other removable hard drives may use proprietary connectors or (like the Gateway drives) nonstandard USB cables. HP offers 80GB and 120GB hard drive cartridges, giving the multimedia user virtually unlimited storage.
You can load photos directly from your digital camera’s memory card. SmartMedia, xD, CF I/II, Microdrive, SD and MMC of various flavors, and Memory Stick’s various forms are all supported. The system’s 400GB hard drive is plenty for photo projects. The a6130n comes with two FireWire drives, handy if you have a camcorder. Everything else (iPod, other MP3 players, webcams, and so forth) connects to the a6130n’s six USB 2.0 ports. All in all, this is a very good platform for multimedia users.
The a6130n is a multimedia powerhouse, thanks to the system’s dual-core AMD Athlon X2 processor and 3GB of system memory. Its Windows Media Encoder score is excellent at 1:28, as is its Photoshop score of 1:17. Both scores make the a6130n one of our better dual-core performers (quad-core machines do achieve higher scores). The system’s 3DMark06 score of 277 points is expectedly low on account of the a6130n’s integrated graphics. The system’s nVidia GeForce 6150SE output is fine for Vista’s Aero effects and light 3D, but if you want to play games, you’ll need to install a graphics card in the system’s PCIe x16 graphics card slot.
